This guide explains how to safely prepare and administer your weekly subcutaneous injection.
1. Before you begin
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, then dry with a clean towel
Gather your supplies (syringe, alcohol swabs, medication vial, sharps container)
Review your prescribed dose and instructions provided by your pharmacy or licensed provider
2. Select and prepare your injection site
Choose one of the following areas:
Abdomen (stomach): 2–3 inches away from the navel (most common)
Front of upper thigh
Back of upper arm (usually if assisted)
Note: Choose soft fatty tissue, not muscle.
Clean the site with an alcohol swab and allow it to air dry. Do not touch, fan, or blow on the area after cleaning.
3. Rotate injection sites
Do not inject in the exact same spot each week
Stay within the same general area if preferred, but move at least 1–2 inches from the previous injection site
This helps reduce irritation, lumps, and absorption issues
4. Prepare the syringe
Important Safety Note: Always verify the prescription label on your medication before injecting. The label contains your prescribed dose and the exact number of units you should take.
Draw air into the syringe equal to your prescribed dose
Inject the air into the vial to make drawing medication easier
Turn the vial upside down and draw the correct dose
Tap the syringe to remove air bubbles and adjust to the exact amount
5. Administer the injection
Gently pinch the skin
Insert the needle at a 90° angle (or 45° if you are very lean)
Inject slowly and steadily until all medication is delivered
6. After injection
Remove the needle straight out
Do not rub the injection site (this may cause irritation)
Lightly press with clean gauze if needed
7. Dispose safely
Immediately place the syringe into a sharps container
Do not reuse needles or syringes
